What is it?
Team-Based learning is a structured form of small-group learning that emphasizes student preparation in advance of class and applying that knowledge in a team setting during class. One of the hallmarks of the team-based learning approach is the Readiness Assessment. The assessment is based on the knowledge students were expected to acquire outside of class. First, the students take the quiz individually and then discuss it as a team. If students want to change their answer based on the team discussion they can appeal. The instructor uses the results of the quizzes and team discussion to determine in what areas students need additional instruction or reinforcement for the remainder of the class session.
Best Practices
- It is important to explain the purpose of the readiness assessment to students at the beginning of the semester. Be very clear that it is a formative assessment used to focus class time.
- Pre-class preparation is key to the success of TBL. Backward design works well when planning TBL.
