Canvas Instructor Training Information

Need to upgrade your Canvas training?

If you are teaching using a new modality (online, online live, hybrid) you will need to go through the appropriate training course and submit your course for review. This process is outlined below, but the main component is building a fully developed course in Canvas at the level being taught.

If you need to upgrade your level of Canvas training, please contact the TLC staff at tlc@richland.edu for access to the appropriate training course.

Course Training & Review

Who needs to complete the course training and review process?

  • Faculty who are already approved to teach at the Online level, will not need any additional training or course review to teach Online Live, Hybrid courses, or Traditional/Enhanced courses.
  • Faculty who are already approved to teach at the Online Live level will need additional training and to go through the course review process to teach Online courses.
  • Faculty who are already approved to teach at the Hybrid level will need additional training and to go through the course review process to teach Online Live and Online courses.
  • Faculty who are new or only approved to teach at the Traditional level will need additional training and to go through the course review process to teach Hybrid, Online Live, and Online courses.

The course review process for all modalities (Online, Online Live, & Hybrid) includes:

  1. Complete the training course for the level being taught.
  2. Create a course at the level being taught - in a sandbox/no-student course. If you need a new sandbox, please contact Kona, Jarry, or Niki.
  3. Get your course approved. Courses will be reviewed using the appropriate Course Review Rubric.
  4. Making any needed corrections based on provided feedback.
  5. Complete the final course review.

Until this process is completed, faculty will NOT have access to their real courses in Canvas.

Courses need to be submitted for the initial review at least two weeks before the start of the course. This is to allow enough time for the review process before the start of the fall semester.

The course review process needs to be completed the Friday before courses start.

Definitions

ONLINE (V): All instruction and assignments are provided online with specific due dates as outlined by the Instructor. Instructors might provide opportunities for live synchronous sessions.

ONLINE LIVE (D): There is a mandatory time when the Instructor and students are online together. An example of this is a live lecture streamed to students over the Internet. All other course materials and assignments are provided online and available at any time during a specified period as outlined by the Instructor. Scheduled time requirements will vary between courses and sections; please refer to the course schedule for more information.

HYBRID (Y): A hybrid class is a combination of face-to-face and ONLINE or ONLINE LIVE instruction. The course content and most assignments are provided online, but some on-campus face-to-face instruction is still required. Examples of this are skills-based activities and labs done on campus, but lecture and other assignments are done online. Face-to-face time requirements will vary between hybrid courses and sections; please refer to the course schedule for more information.

TRADITIONAL (ENHANCED): A traditional course is one where all of the instruction is provided in a face-to-face classroom setting. However, students are expected to regularly supplement their learning through the use of technology. Examples include online course content, assessments, homework, or discussions

What is required for each modality?

The requirements for each modality are different, so it is important to review what is required for your course.

Make sure to review all requirements and let the TLC staff know if you have any questions!

Ready to get started!

Are you ready to get started? Below are the steps for the course review process:

  1. Contact the TLC staff to let them know that you need to upgrade your level of Canvas Training. They will add you to the appropriate training course.
  2. Make sure you have a course in Canvas to start building/developing your course. Normally, this would be a sandbox course. If you don't have a sandbox course or need a new one, just a TLC staff member know and they'll build one for you!
  3. Complete the training course.
  4. Complete your course and get it approved. Information about the requirements and how to get a course approved are included in the training courses.
  5. Once your course review is completed and been approved, TLC staff will create your "real" course with students. You can then copy your sandbox course content over into your real course. Note: Real courses will not be created until the course review process has been completed.

And always, remember, TLC staff are just an email, phone call, or Zoom session away! :-)
