Three Phases of Learning--Before, During & After Class
To get the most from your studies, keep in mind that there are three phases of learning: before, during, and after class. Use the following strategies to enhance your learning in any class.
BEFORE CLASS
Preview: Get ready for class time with preview activities that jumpstart your learning. Skim textbook materials that will be covered in the upcoming class; use active reading techniques to note headings, boldface words, chapter objectives, and summary information and take time to jot down questions you have about the material that can focus your attention in class and be used to gain additional information that may be needed from the instructor.
DURING CLASS
Keep Focused: Take notes on important points covered in class and ask questions when you need more information. Participate in any small group or class activities; your contributions are important to class learning and will also boost your individual knowledge and learning.
AFTER CLASS
Review: Read your notes as soon as possible after class to fill in any gaps in information and note any questions you still have about the material.
Study: Take time throughout the week to read and re-read material as well as review notes. Consider a study group with one or more fellow students to help you refresh and review learning. See the entry on Power Study Hour for more ideas.
