This video gives directions if you would like to use Copyleaks to automatically check student Canvas Assignment submissions for plagiarism/AI content.
AI Content Detector
As of 1/16/24, you will notice a new, streamlined appearance to your Copyleaks reports. Copyleaks has updated their wording to denote the neutral stance they’ve always held. Where “Plagiarism” was previously displayed, you’ll now see “Matched Text,” and where “Cheating” was used to refer to documents with AI Content, you’ll now simply see “AI Content Detected”. The user interface of the report has been improved in that both scores will always be displayed, so no more clicking through prompts in order to view the AI portion of the scan!

Video showing how an Instructor can manually submit a file or discussion post for plagiarism/AI content detection
This video shows how an Instructor can upload an individual file (or files) for plagiarism/AI content detection outside of a traditional Canvas Assignment. This can be used for files submitted directly to the Instructor. In addition, if you would like to check a Discussion post or essay question, you can copy the Discussion post or essay response into a document and then upload it here to have it checked for plagiarism/AI content.
Instructors must first follow these instructions Links to an external site. to set up the Teacher Scanning Tool as an External Tool and add it to a Module in each of their Canvas courses before they can manually scan files through Copyleaks. (This is a once-time process for each course.)
Note: Students cannot see anything submitted to this manual Teacher Scanning Tool or even that this module exists (as long as the module is left unpublished.)

Important Information
-
As Canvas may not immediately notify Copyleaks that the student submission has been created, we suggest waiting up to 90 seconds before clicking on the resubmit button. This will allow Canvas to notify us that the assignment has been created.
-
If a student uploads multiple versions of a document to the same assignment, we will NOT compare to their previous submissions. For example, if a student uploads Version 1, Version 2, and Version 3 of a document, we will NOT scan Version 3 against Version 1 and Version 2. However, if the student has uploaded this document to a different assignment, it will be compared. For example, if the assignment is uploaded to English 101 and History 101, we will compare the two against one another.
-
When Duplicating / Importing / Copying an assignment, the assignment Copyleaks configuration settings will NOT be copied into the new assignment.

Copyleaks Resources for Students
If faculty choose to use Copyleaks, it is important that they let students know so that students are (1) aware that their work will be checked using this type of technology, and (2) students understand what they need to do to properly submit their assignment. There isn't a big change, but students will need to check a box indicating their work is their own if Copyleaks is used for an assignment. To help with this, the following student resources have been provided for faculty to make available to students.
