What is it?

Less us more them

Learner-centered teaching, also referred to as student-centered learning, changes the focus in the classroom from the instructor to the students. Instead of the instructor providing information to be absorbed passively by the students, the instructor becomes the facilitator connecting student prior knowledge to the new content and providing multiple opportunities for students to synthesize and apply the information being taught. Research shows that students learn more, retain information longer and are better able to apply their learning when taught in a student-centered environment.

Best Practices

  • Frequent learning checks
  • Connection to prior knowledge
  • Reflection
  • Collaboration
  • Multiple opportunities to engage with content
