Friday, August 28 from 10-11 am - Zoom Video for Students - Mandatory or Not?
Should students be required to turn on their video during Zoom sessions? This topic has been recently discussed by some of our Richland faculty and they thought it would be good to have an open session to talk about some of the reasons not to require students to turn on their video. And, things we can do to make it easier on students if we do need to require students to turn on their video. This is an open session, with no leader, and anyone interested in the topic is welcome to attend and share their thoughts. Creating an Interactive Canvas Homepage
Most faculty have their course homepage set to Modules, but if you are using a page as a Homepage or are interested in learning how to make an interactive homepage, this session is for you! In this session, Kristi Palmer (Professor of Sociology) is going to demonstrate how to build an interactive homepage using Google slides and incorporating Bitmoji, backgrounds, images, etc. These can be easily updated and changed without having to recreate anything in Canvas and you can add as many links and resources as you want. Wednesday, September 23 from 12-1 pm - Humanizing the Online Environment
Humanizing is a pedagogical approach that supports the non-cognitive components of learning and increases the success of more students in online courses. In this presentation, we will consider why supporting the non-cognitive dimensions of learning is so important for students from marginalized groups and look at examples of humanized online teaching strategies. You will see how we are inspiring -- not requiring -- faculty to humanize their online courses through faculty-centric professional development in California.

Holding Space in the Online Environment
"Holding space" means being physically, mentally, and emotionally present for someone. It means to create a relatively safe space where students can express their feelings. This session will be an opportunity for faculty to partner with staff from the Student Success team who will empower faculty with inclusive language, basic facilitation tools, and resources to ultimately empower students in the online learning space they create.

New Rich Content Editor (RCE)

For the Spring 2021 semester, Canvas will switch to the new Rich Content Editor (RCE). The RCE is the toolbar and options available when editing Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes, Pages, Syllabus, and Announcements. This session will provide an overview of the features/functionality of the RCE, as well as information on how to turn it on early!
