Zoom is Not a Room: So What is It? (Video)

Zoom is not a Room: So what is it?

Monday, August 3 from 11 am -12 pm

Teaching in real-time on Zoom is a great way to engage with students and share an online classroom space. So why doesn’t it feel right? Humans are remarkable communicators, yet we are surprisingly unaware just how advanced our communication is. We stopped noticing ourselves noticing cues so long ago, it seems as if they were there at all. Teachers instinctively build unique classroom climates, balancing hundreds of cues and signals between our students and ourselves and between our students and each other in one class, sometimes thousands. This is why Zoom live can seem a bit like a pair of cool looking but uncomfortable shoes. Hard to relax in and unreasonably taxing. Come and learn about the unique communication dynamic we build in the classroom and the obstacles that can appear when we begin building it in Zoom. Understanding why Zoom feels awkward is the first step to countering those challenges. Learn the why and the how, with some proven techniques to strengthen the classroom climate in our digital classrooms.
