Saving Files in the Correct Format

save-icon.png Richland and most Instructors use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). To make sure your Instructors can open and grade your assignments, you need to be sure to save your documents in a format your instructor will be able to open with Microsoft Office programs.

The table below explains how to save your files in the correct format:

What program are you using? How should you save your files?
Microsoft Office If you are using Microsoft Office then then the default format (.doc or .docx) is the one that you should use. Remember, as a Richland student you can download and use Microsoft Office 365 for FREE!

Microsoft Works
WordPerfect
OpenOffice
Google Docs

If you are using any of these programs you will need to save your files in Word format (.doc, .docx). This can be done by choosing "Save As" when saving your files and choosing either .doc or .docx (both are compatible with Word).

Files can also be saved as Rich Text Format (.rtf), but most instructors using Canvas prefer that files be saved in Microsoft office .doc/.docx format, because those can be graded much easier in Canvas.

Other Program

If you are another program not mentioned above you will still need to save your files in Word format (.doc, .docx).

Important Note: Your instructor may require you install a specific software program for your course. Please check with your instructor directly for these requirements.
